Noise Troubleshooting

How to troubleshoot for noise

We recommend to print this page and follow step-by-step:

  1. Move amplifier to another area of the house. e.g. another room, kitchen countertop, office, etc. This to isolate the amplifier from other electronics and is important for troubleshooting for noise.

  2. connect AC power cord directly to the wall outlet. Do NOT use a power strip or a power conditioner.

  3. Do NOT connect any INPUT cables or devices. (WA22, WA23 LUNA, WA24 20th AE requires the supplied grounding caps to be installed for this test and when RCA input is not used).

  4. Connect your headphone and set the volume knob to zero (0) or the lowest position.

  5. Power ON the amplifier and allow 2-5 minutes of warm up. Larger models requires longer warm up time. During this warm up time, noise through the headphone may be present. This is normal as the tubes heat up.

  6. Set the volume to 10 o’clock position.

  7. Listen through your headphone. Do you still hear noise?

  8. Is the noise on both (left) and (right) channels?

  9. If the noise comes from one side only, power OFF the amplifier and allow tubes to cool down to be handled, typically 5-10 minutes. Switch the tube from left to right position and repeat steps 4 thru 8.

  10. If the noise moved to the opposite side, the noise is tubes related. Replace the tubes in a matched pair.
